Fasting conditions with digestive disorders
How can people with digestive problems fast, what are the important conditions for their fasting, the important points that they should consider, we have given below for these people.
Dr. Pejman Alavinejad stated: Gastrointestinal patients can be divided into three groups during the holy month of Ramadan; The first group are people whose nature of illness not only does not contradict fasting, but these people can benefit from fasting in order to improve or control their illness. Among these diseases is fatty liver.
He continued: In fatty liver disease, when a person avoids excessive eating and loses weight in this month, he naturally goes to the main treatment of fatty liver, which is rooted in overeating, inactivity and overweight.
The sub-specialist of Gastroenterology, Liver and Endoscopy of Imam Khomeini Medical Training Center (RA) in Ahvaz said: In addition to fatty liver, patients with irritable bowels can also fast. These digestive pains have a psychological origin, and it is natural that a person can reach better physical conditions with spiritual peace that is obtained during fasting and worship and avoiding the daily stresses of life. Therefore, such patients can fast.
Alavinejad added: the conditions of fasting and peace of mind that a person gets during this month can help improve his condition. The holy month of Ramadan is an opportunity for people in urban communities to reduce the usual tensions of their daily lives and take care of themselves so as not to suffer from digestive diseases of spiritual origin and mental stress.
He stated: The second group is people who have chronic and controlled digestive disease; Among these diseases is silent chronic hepatitis, for which a person must take a pill during the day. In this situation, the patient can take the pill in non-fasting hours, such as after breaking the fast.
This academic staff member of Jundi Shapur University of Medical Sciences, Ahvaz continued: Also, people who have silent inflammatory bowel disease and take pills twice a day, can change the time of their pills so that it is not during fasting hours.
He added: People who suffer from gastric reflux and used to take a pill before fasting can also postpone taking their pill to the time before eating Suhoor or before eating Iftar and fulfill their religious duty in Ramadan.
Referring to ways to prevent gastric reflux, this specialist in gastroenterology, liver and endoscopy said: fasting people may have a great desire to eat food during iftar due to hunger and eat a lot of food in this situation due to a temporary drop in potassium. , the person feels weak, so he tends to lie down after breaking the fast, which aggravates the reflux condition.
He continued: It is recommended to eat slowly at the time of breaking the fast and first break your fast by consuming warm liquids and simple foods, which will raise the blood sugar a little so that the body’s cravings and thirst for food will decrease, and avoid lying down immediately after eating. Avoid eating.
Alavinejad said: The third group is those who have critical and serious conditions in terms of suffering from digestive diseases; These people are not allowed to fast. For example, the liver conditions of patients with liver cirrhosis and liver failure are such that the slightest change in the level of serum electrolytes or serum sugar may bring their mental or liver conditions to the stage of non-compensation, which causes harm to the body and soul of these patients. .
He continued: Inflammatory bowel patients who have recently relapsed and must take medicine regularly at six or eight hour intervals are not allowed to fast. Also, those suffering from peptic ulcers who have recently suffered bleeding, should not fast because the medicines must be taken regularly and the digestive tract must not be empty of food for any hour.
This specialist in gastroenterology, liver and endoscopy stated: Also, patients who have had surgery, depending on the type of surgery, the doctor determines whether they can fast or not. For example, if a person has a gallstone disease and it is removed by surgery, or a person who has a part of his intestine removed, they have no problem fasting in this month by following the medical tips and recommendations. But for gastrointestinal fistulas or surgery that has complications, according to the type of complications, the patient should consult his physician who is fully aware of the conditions about fasting.
Alavinejad said: Fasting people, whether people with digestive diseases or healthy people, should pay attention to important points in this field while fasting in order to prevent the occurrence or recurrence of the disease. One of the important points is that lying down after eating is not suitable and causes reflux and indigestion in a person to intensify.
He said: eating slowly is very important and consuming foods with suitable fiber, including fresh vegetables such as lettuce, is also very important, because these foods retain water and gradually release it due to their high fiber content. The reason can be good water reserves for the body during fasting hours.
A member of the academic staff of Jundi Shapour University of Medical Sciences Ahvaz added: On the other hand, considering that the holy month of Ramadan is in the hot season and the body sweats a lot, we recommend as much as possible activities outside the home during the fasting hours, especially at noon. When it’s warmer, minimize it.
