What is BMI? – Body Mass Index
The BMI calculator uses your weight and height to calculate your body mass index. In the 1830s, Belgian sociologist and statistician Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet developed the BMI concert based on social psychology. How to calculate BMI?
The BMI is calculated using the metric system by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared.
For example: Weight: 78kg, Height = 175 cm (1.75m)
The following formula is used for the weight (lb) and height (in) in the second formula.
Calculate your BMI by multiplying your weight in pounds (lbs) by your height in inches (in) squared by 703.
Example: Weight = 155 lbs, Height = 5’5 ″ (65″)

What is Body Adiposity Index? – BAI
The body fat index defines total body mass as adipose tissue only. Instead of body mass index, BAI is calculated without using bodyweight (BMI). Instead, compare the size of your hips to a person’s height. According to population studies, BAI is pretty much equal to the body fat percentage for adult men and women of various nationalities. BAI is a simple method for calculating body fat percentage.
To calculate the circumference of the hips, stand upright in a relaxed position with your feet as close together as possible. The best tool for measuring the circumference of the hips is a measuring tape.
It’s surprising that adiposity can be accurately estimated without using a mechanical or electronic body weight scale. Thus, even in remote locations where only the most basic and least expensive tools (a tape measure) are available, a reliable estimate of adiposity can be obtained. While adult height remains relatively constant, the measurement of hip circumference may introduce errors in the estimation of BAI.
Let’s use a 40-year-old woman with a height of 172 cm and a hip size of 107 cm as an example. We can enter all of this information into our BAI calculator and get the result BAI = 29.43%, which is considered healthy.
Normal Body Adiposity Index
Women:
- 20-39 years old: 21% are underweight, 21-33% are healthy, 33-39% are overweight, and 39% are obese.
- 40-59 years old: 23% are underweight, 23-35% are healthy, 35-41% are overweight, and 41% are obese.
- 60-79 years old: 25% underweight, 25-38% healthy, 38-43% overweight, > 43% obese
Men:
- 20-39 years old: 8% underweight, 8-21% healthy, 21-26% overweight, > 26% obese

The Differences between Adiposity and Obesity
Fat and obesity both indicate the presence of extra fat in the body. Furthermore, fats and obesity identify people who are at high risk of developing health problems as a result of excess body fat.
