We all know how refreshing and delicious a nice frothy smoothie can be during spring or summer time. But once the days get greyer and colder, we naturally start craving more grounding, warming foods. This doesn’t mean you have to start cooking all of your meals now – there are great ways of integrating this desire into a high raw lifestyle.
Supercharge your Smoothie with these ingredients
Turmeric
The old traditional Indian medical system called Ayurveda has been using spices for thousands of years to treat or prevent countless ailments. Turmeric, an orange pungent, astringent tasting powder, is one of the best supplements when it comes to supporting healthy body functions. The main organs it treats are the heart, skin, liver, and lungs. It’s a powerful antioxidant which helps fight off cancer cells, purifies the body, and rids it of parasites. It supports healing of infections, wounds, indigestion, and poisoning. Furthermore, it’s a great detoxifier and gives your immune system a big boost. Together with its heating quality, it’s a nice helper during these cold, wet months lying ahead of us.
Ginger
Closely related to turmeric is the ginger root, another spice often used in ayurvedic medicine. It’s commonly known for relieving nausea, helping with motion/morning sickness, upset stomach, and gas. But this all-rounder can also relieve pain in your joints or from menstruation, in your chest or back. It can even be used to treat skin burns. That’s all because of its wonderful anti-inflammatory effects! Even my grandmother has been telling me ever since I was a child that ginger-infused water would fight off any cold or help with a sore throat. Her advice was priceless – and it’s helped countless times.
Coconut Milk
A nice round-up for the sweet-and-spicy taste of this smoothie is coconut milk, which has been getting a great reputation for good reasons. Despite its higher fat content, it’s filled with essential nutrients such as vitamin C, E, and B-complex plus minerals including iron, selenium, calcium, and magnesium. Especially during winter time, this superfood makes for a satisfying, grounding meal which keeps you full and energized for a long time since fat isn’t as quickly digested as carbohydrate. Another plus is that the containing lauric acid has an antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral effect on the body that greatly supports your immune system. The high nutrient content of coconuts gives you beautiful, shiny hair and skin, which really needs that extra care during winter.
Taking all of this information into account, you can see why this is the perfect warming smoothie recipe for chilly days!
