In this study, which Dr. Rangan and his colleagues called PREVENT-ADPKD, they investigated whether water consumption can reduce the formation of cysts in the kidneys. According to Rangan, water consumption prevents the hormonal function that enables the growth of cysts.
Unfortunately, half of the patients with polycystic kidney disease end up with kidney failure and as a result have to undergo permanent dialysis or kidney transplant. If the claim of this study that water consumption is effective is proven, drinking sufficient amounts of water can be considered as a treatment to prevent the progression of kidney damage caused by the growth of cysts.
Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited genetic problem in which hundreds of small cysts, or fluid-filled sacs, grow in healthy kidney tissue. These bags eventually cover the entire healthy tissue and cause the destruction of the kidney tissue and reduce its function.
