Cool down and give your kidneys the support they need this summer with this kidney cleansing watermelon juice. It is high in lycopene for cardiovascular support, and contains a compound called citrulline (highly concentrated in the rind) that reduces body fat.
Watermelon is a natural diuretic, and therefore helps increase the flow of urine, but does not strain the kidneys (unlike alcohol and caffeine). Watermelons also help the liver process ammonia (waste from protein digestion), which eases strain on the kidneys while getting rid of excess fluids.
This melon is also one of the best alkalizing fruits out there, so it helps balance pH levels in the body. It also acts as a wonderful anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-coagulant, digestive aid and gentle laxative.
If you choose to juice the rind, always make sure you are using an organic watermelon, or a watermelon that hasn’t been sprayed by pesticides or herbicides (if you’re buying watermelons at a farmers market, ask the grower if they spray). The rind helps balance the sweetness of the juice, and contains a host of beneficial vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Choosing seeded watermelons is also a plus, because the seeds contain curcubocitrin, which dilates capillaries and improves blood circulation in the body.
Kidney Cleansing Watermelon Juice Recipe
Ingredients:
– 6-7 cups organic watermelon flesh
– 1 lime, peeled
– couple sprigs of mint leaves
– Optional: 1 cup organic watermelon rind (only use if organic)
Method:
Stick all of the above ingredients through a juicer (I recommend the Omega or Breville) and enjoy! For an extra cooling effect, add some ice to the juice!
Alternatively, you can blend the above ingredients in a high-speed blender like the Vitamix and strain in a nut-milk bag (or you can leave it un-strained).
