What is precocious puberty?
On average, girls start puberty between the ages of 9 and 14. However, some girls start growing breasts or pubic hair at the age of 8, and even a few of them reach puberty at the age of seven. The existing specialized term for this condition is precocious puberty. Precocious puberty is five times more likely in girls than in boys.
Observing your daughter’s puberty under normal conditions is a kind of emotional tension and challenge. But when puberty starts early, such situations can be really stressful.
Most of the time there is nothing wrong with your child, your daughter is probably just on the spectrum of people who are prone to precocious puberty. Of course, your child may suffer from some social or physical discomfort for a while, but the rest of his peers will also experience their puberty not too far away. However, if early puberty is in conflict with your child’s best interests, you can delay puberty with medication.
How can I tell if my daughter has started puberty?
Usually, the first sign of puberty in a girl is the growth of her breasts, which start as a small bump in the nipple area. One breast may start growing earlier than the other, and may be tender to the touch. Following this, pubic hair growth, body odor (due to increased activity of sweat glands), and acne (due to increased activity of sebaceous glands) usually begin. Also, probably during puberty, your daughter’s height will increase and her pelvis and hips will become wider and her waist will become narrower.
Also, your daughter may become moody and irritable. It is likely that white or yellow mucous secretions will also be produced from her vagina, and about two to two and a half years later, her menstruation will begin. Armpit hair also usually appears during late puberty. The whole process usually takes about two and a half to three years, but it can also last as long as four or five years. But in fact, their onset at this age is within the normal range.
“Children whose puberty begins at the age of 7 or 8 are usually heavier and placed at the end of the growth chart. Francine Kaufman, a pediatric endocrinologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, says: “If these children are otherwise healthy, the presence of a little hair and breast tissue is nothing to worry about. However, it is a good idea to have your child examined by a doctor. In fact, visiting a doctor at the beginning of puberty is generally a good and wise idea.
According to Kaufman: This is the right time to evaluate your daughter’s physical and mental health and make sure that all the changes in her body are normal. This also gives your daughter a good opportunity to ask about her body from an expert in the medical profession (besides her mother or father).
If your daughter is not yet 7 years old but shows signs of puberty, make sure to make an appointment with her doctor. Of course, the sprouting of breasts or the growth of pubic hair by itself does not mean that puberty has fully begun – that is, these conditions may even begin several years before the release of all the necessary hormones – but still, it is better to consult a doctor. Examine your daughter and determine if there is a need for tests or treatments for your daughter or not.
With one exception, no other long-term physical effects have been identified as a result of precocious puberty: while your child may initially be taller than his peers, his early growth spurt may eventually cause him to grow taller as an adult. Stay shorter than average
