How is Bartholin’s abscess diagnosed?
To determine Bartholin’s abscess, the doctor performs a clinical examination of the lump or bump in the vagina. It is most likely to be sampled to check for sexually transmitted diseases. It may require treatment. If she is more than 40 years old, or is in menopause, the mass will be sampled
Bartholin’s glands are two very small pea-sized glands, and their ducts open into the valve, which are located under the bulbo-cavernous muscle. One or both glands may become infected. Sometimes bacteria enter these glands from the surface of feces and cause this disease. Then it causes swelling in the surrounding tissues and may cause an abscess. In Bartholin’s cyst, there is no pain, sensitivity, erythema and inflammation.
At what age is Bartholin’s abscess common?
It is more common after puberty.
Does genetics play a role in the development of Bartholin’s abscess?
Genetics is not a significant factor (in the formation of abscess).
What are the risk factors of this disease?
• Poor hygiene
• Having sex without using protective equipment (condom) with different people
How is the disease diagnosed?
• Cervical and vaginal cultures to detect chlamydia and gonococci
• Bartholin’s abscess forms in 2-3 days
Prevention and control:
• Prevention of contracting this disease by observing the hygiene of the genital area
• Treatment with antibiotics such as Amoxiclav
• Sitting in a basin of warm water
• Two weeks after the treatment, avoid intercourse
• Catheter removal four to six weeks after treatment
• Inserting the catheter again if the catheter falls out before the original time
treatment:
• Under sclerotherapy: the cyst is drained, then the inside of the cyst is filled with fibrotic tissue. The return of cyst fluid was prevented. The treatment time in sclerotherapy was fast and the patients did not have secondary sexual problems after the surgery.
• Under aspiration operation: only the liquid inside the cyst was removed.
