How To Get Motivated to Work Out and Eat Healthy

It happens even to the best of us. You decide one day while binge eating junk food that your unhealthy eating behaviours must stop. You make a plan to eat only vegetables and fruit, and on top of that, work out every day. This plan lasts for a maximum of one week before you slip back into your old, unhealthy habits.

Once again, eating junk food on a daily basis is a norm, and the extent of your daily exercise is walking up the stairs. But, your desire to live a healthier all around life still exists.

How do you find the motivation to start this health journey without slipping back into your old, unhealthy habits?

Set A Goal

Now, I know. This is the advice every health blog or trainer gives. It’s a lot easier said than done. But, there is a lot of truth to it. It’s hard to fight to obtain a certain goal of yours when you don’t really know what that goal is. For example, if you want to start eating healthy, don’t start by saying you want to cut all junk food out of your diet. It won’t work, and you’ll end up quitting a week later because it’s too hard. Instead, set a more attainable goal.

Cut out junk food during the week, but allow yourself to eat some more unhealthy options on the weekends while continuing to keep a balanced diet. Cut out soda and other drinks that are full of added sugars, and drink water instead.

Creating realistic goals like these will motivate you to live a healthier life. If you want to be motivated to work out, once again, set a realistic goal. If you never work out, it wouldn’t make sense to expect yourself to all of a sudden run or lift weights every single day.

Instead, set a goal of working out three times a week. This way, you have a break on your days off and don’t feel too overwhelmed. Slowly, as you progress, your goals can increase to four, five, or six days a week.

Make It Fun

One of the most effective ways to find the motivation to work out and eat healthy is to make it fun for yourself!

When trying to eat healthy, make sure to buy healthy groceries that you actually like. Don’t constantly force yourself to eat foods you hate; you’ll just end up miserable and craving unhealthy foods even more.

Instead, keep healthy options that you find delicious. If you like hummus, make sure to keep hummus and cut up vegetables accessible. If you love fresh pineapple, keep a container in your fridge with pre-cut pineapple. This way, when you’re craving a quick snack you can easily reach into the fridge and have a healthy option.

One way of making working out fun is to have a specific workout playlist of all your favourite upbeat songs. This way, every time you work out, you know you’ll be able to listen to some of your favourite songs.

Two of the easiest ways to motivate yourself to work out and eat healthy are to set goals and make it fun. Don’t be too hard on yourself, but make sure to stay determined! Good luck!
