1. Take strict supportive care to prevent severe muscle activity and increase the patient’s life expectancy. These cares include: corrective exercises, physical therapy, such as passive stretching or hydrotherapy, breathing therapy and speech therapy. Some patients also need to be cared for with special staff.
2. Correct skeletal deformities caused by muscle weakness. Orthopedic devices, such as bracing tools, can be suitable for certain conditions, such as dark tilt of the back from the side, and of course, patients with deformed feet should wear medical shoes. Severe conditions of these diseases should be treated with corrective orthopedic operations.
3. Control seizures with anticonvulsant drugs. Reduce muscle soreness with corticosteroids and extend the life of weakened muscle cells with immunosuppressants. Antibiotics will also prevent respiratory infections.
4. Perform auxiliary ventilation, such as positive non-invasive airway pressure, or permanent ventilation through tracheostomy for respiratory failure. These treatments require initial monitoring and intermediate measures.
5. ACE inhibitors or beta blockers (for the elimination of stress hormones) are used in advanced cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disorder) conditions, and for more acute cases, a pacemaker should be used. There are other treatments, such as gastric emptying and special eye care.
