Overview of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)
This vitamin is found in eggs, whole grains, vegetables, seeds, soy and liver. Pyridoxine is essential as a coenzyme of many enzymes. Also, in making important compounds such as serotonin, Vitamin B6 is needed for epinephrine and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters) and the “heme” molecule (for hematopoiesis).
Because B6 is found in many foods, its deficiency is rare. Deficiency symptoms include dry skin, cracked lips and corners of the mouth, weakness and insomnia.
The need for this vitamin increases during pregnancy and breastfeeding and the elderly (over 50 years old).
