Treat memory related diseases with nutritional prosthetics
In general, great steps are taken in the field of treating various diseases, and today researchers have succeeded in developing prosthetics that can be useful in the treatment of memory-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Diseases related to memory have a wide spectrum, but dementia is the most well-known part of it, and Alzheimer’s is actually one of the most common types of senile dementia.
Dementia is caused by the destruction of brain cells and causes a gradual decrease in a person’s cognitive function. The most important symptoms of dementia are personality changes, memory loss, neglect of personal hygiene and difficulty in speaking and social relationships.
Researchers are looking to develop a small device that can be implanted in the hippocampus region of patients and accelerate the treatment of memory-related diseases.
This device carries electrodes that help the neurons to perform their tasks and convert the incoming information from the surroundings into long-term memories.
This device was made by researchers from the University of Southern California under the supervision of Ted Berger.
Ted Berger says about this project: We are investigating the results of this device on humans and so far we have obtained good results. In this method, electrodes in the hippocampus of the brain record the signals of nerve cells during learning or encoding. In the following, after examining how to convert the signals, mathematical models for the input and output signals were developed.
This small device, called a brain implant, can help a person’s hippocampus improve their memory.
The memory prosthetic implant is equipped with electrodes for recording signals in the learning mode, microprocessors for checking and electrodes that stimulate nerve cells to encode the output signals or memory.
This is not the first time that brain implants are made, but other implants were also made for people with Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy and used as an experimental treatment.
