Spring has sprung, and so has this mango detox smoothie. Now is the time to pump out all the stagnant toxins that built up over winter – through the blood (kidneys), lymph and adrenals.
The lymphatic system plays a major role in detoxification. It removes wastes from every cell in the body and helps regulate the immune system. If you don’t focus on cleansing the lymphatic system first, toxins released during any kind of cleanse will simply be stored in other areas of the body (instead of being flushed out).
This smoothie is a great way to pump the lymphatic system because it contains the chlorophyll in spirulina (if you so choose to add, which I highly recommend you do), the citric acid in lemon and oranges, and the bromelain in pineapple, which help tighten and tone the lymph vessels and push everything out.
Once the toxins are squeezed out by these ingredients, they are shuttled out by the diuretic effects of the smoothie as a whole, and by attaching to the chia seeds, which absorb the toxins and eliminate them without being re-absorbed back into the blood stream.
This spring cleaning mango detox smoothie is great for the blood because it removes arterial plaques by flushing out the circulatory system. It also improves kidney function, which is the main organ involved in blood filtration (kidneys filter about 120-150 quarts of blood every day (to produce about 1-2 quarts of urine, composed of wastes and extra fluid).
The adrenals are also highly supported by this smoothie. Maca powder helps balance and regulate the endocrine system and keeps our hormones happy and healthy. Ginger is another great herb for the adrenals that helps modulate cortisol levels and reduces feelings of anxiety in the body.
