Beets are a miracle vegetable. They are packed with beneficial phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
From the Middle Ages, beetroot was used as a treatment for a variety of conditions, especially issues that concerned the digestive tract and cardiovascular system. Nowadays, beets are known for their whole-body healing effects.
As a natural blood cleaner, beets help detox and cleanse the blood of heavy metals, toxins and waste – all thanks to the antioxidant glutathione, which supports phase II detoxification in the liver (1). It is the betalains in beetroot that help form glutathione, which allows the body to neutralize toxins and make them water-soluble (so they can be excreted through urine and flushed from the body).
One important compound found in beetroot juice is nitrate (that is, inorganic nitrate, not the stuff found as a preservative in deli meats and other processed meats). Nitrates from beets get converted to nitric oxide in the body, which relaxes and dilates blood vessels. This means that beets increase the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood (2).
Increasing the oxygen capacity of the blood can help boost athletic performance, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation in the body, and promote good brain health (such as preventing neurodegenerative diseases).
