Treatment of sexual addiction
In a situation where a person’s sexual acts are continuous and forced, and this involves his mind and daily affairs, and causes a kind of sexual obsession in him, which is called a state of sexual addiction.
What is sex addiction?
Today, sex addiction and obsessive pornography is increasing and needs special attention because it is the most hidden compulsive behavior in the whole world, and there are very few referrals for treatment of this problem because many people feel extremely ashamed. And they have little cooperation to attend treatment programs.
The studies conducted among clients show that men come with this problem 4 times more than women and it seems that social issues cause women not to come for treatment.
When sexual behavior becomes compulsive and interferes with a person’s life, the disease, addiction has started.
There is no significant similarity in the personality of people with sex addiction. Many addicts have problems with the initial behaviors of sexual addiction in their lives, and there are very few addicts who have only one level of sexual temptation. It should also be mentioned that sexual addiction is not a phenomenon for the lower classes of society, but is seen among all economic and social groups.
Sexual addiction has different levels, which of course is painful at every level. Negative emotions such as anger, alienation, loneliness, shame, despair, heartbreak, etc. lead a person to isolation and more psychological problems. In sexual addiction, there are basic limits and boundaries in family life. and social norms are quickly trampled and behaviors such as violence and aggression, rape of relatives, child abuse, etc. happen.
In sexual addiction, sexual behaviors reinforce each other, in other words, the addict tends from one type of behavior to another. Research in this field has shown that in most cases, sexual behavior is related to behaviors resulting from other types of addiction, such as addiction to eating, work, drug use, etc.
Sexual addiction includes a series of specializations such as preoccupation and obsession, that is, a person is constantly mentally preoccupied with sexual situations and events, and the person’s constant focus on sexual issues causes a high level of sexual excitability in him.
The second feature In sexual addiction, the behavior is repetitive In other words, a person does not continue his sexual behavior for satisfaction, but the goal is to be stimulated as much as possible, and in this way, this addiction leads to interference with daily plans and disrupts social and individual functioning, but despite these complications, the behavior continues. slow down
So the third feature , Loss of control (compulsion) of the person despite the resulting problems who continues to repeat his behaviors including high irritability without a sense of satisfaction, and cannot stop the behavior even though he dedicates more time to stop it every day.
Fatigue is the fourth characteristic of sex addiction . A person who feels guilty and ashamed of his severe and uncontrollable behavior and the harm he causes to others, becomes completely tired and frustrated.
In general, for sex addicts, the experience of addiction develops through a four-stage cycle that becomes more intense with each cycle:
Mental preoccupation: The addict’s mind is completely filled with sexual thoughts. This state of mind causes an obsessive effort for sexual stimulation.
Manners and habit formation: It is the usual work routine of every addict that leads to sexual behavior. The habits of addicts increase mental preoccupation and cause awakening and sexual stimulation.
Obsessive sexual behavior: Committing a sexual act, which is the ultimate purpose of mental preoccupation and rituals, cannot be controlled or stopped for an addict.
Despair and boredom: the strong feeling of despair that the addict has in relation to his behavior and helplessness.
The pain and suffering that the addict suffers at the end of each round of the addiction cycle may be relieved or forgotten by the re-engagement of the mind that restarts the addiction cycle.
It can be said that the main problem is that a person has the impression that it is not very different from ordinary people, because addicts cannot remain steadfast on a set of behaviors, so they think that because their behavior is not constant, they are able to control themselves, and this is the effect of It does not harm their lives.
These people often have periodic (situational) sexual excess cycles with weekly and monthly breaks, for example, in their city, they live an apparently “normal” life, but they have created a hidden world for themselves. These people make a lot of promises to themselves, but they don’t stop doing it, because they can’t at all. In a way, it can be said that addiction becomes the central concern of an addict’s life.
One of the tools used in this area is the Internet, because in virtual sex addiction, a person is involved in a completely isolated environment (without the possibility of arrest and legal problems), and on the other hand, there is a huge variety of choices in terms of type, place, and time. has it .
Many people who have problems in establishing healthy communication for various reasons, satisfy themselves for hours by using this type of dreaming. Due to these factors, the rate of growth of sexual addiction to the Internet is very high. People spend a lot of time on the internet and face related problems.
According to experts, porn addiction is one of the most severe sexual addictions and is equivalent to cocaine addiction. In a survey in 2003, it was shown that:
• 90% of children aged 8 to 19 have visited porn sites
• The maximum age of this problem is 12 to 17 years
• 12% of all Internet sites are related to porn
• 25% of all search engines are related to porn
Behavioral and psychological problems that are formed as a result of sexual addiction are very complex, such as the isolation of a person that occurs as a result of this behavior.
Many of these people suffer from severe depression and anxiety (especially in relation to being discovered). Obsessive suicidal thoughts are seen in about 72%, suicide attempts in 17% of these people. Suicide is very common in people who have lost their control. Low self-confidence, shame, disappointment and frustration are very common in these people. Also, lack of trust in communication is abundantly seen.
Weak marital communication and weakness in commitment and intimacy with spouse cause problems among these people because of the compulsion in addiction. Many family functions and responsibilities such as communication, family functioning and family sex life are affected, even communication with children is also under the influence and is usually very limited.
Sometimes, creating a temporary restriction in such people will be accompanied by a very strong subsequent increase, and even though such people are very active sexually, they have very poor sexual information.
