Varicose veins form when your veins stretch and their valves do not work anymore. Fortunately, you do not need to be stuck with them forever. Performing exercise and maintaining a healthy weight is important, and so is a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet.
This smoothie helps by reducing inflammation and also supporting the veins in the legs by strengthening the valves. Rutin, a bioflavonoid found in certain fruit and vegetables, help protect the walls of veins and help them work better (1). They also help relieve swelling, aching, and pain from varicose veins. They are found abundantly in cranberries and fruits that provide plenty of vitamin C like citrus fruit!
There are a variety of different bioflavonoids, which also help strengthen vein values that direct blood flow. Lemons, oranges, and grapefruit are particularly high in bioflavonoids, so be sure to consume plenty of these fruits when thinking about improving the condition of your veins.
Aim for drinking this smoothie once a day, and go out for a walk to get some exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Reduce consumption of inflammation-causing foods like dairy, wheat, eggs, soy, and refined sugar and packaged products.
Smoothie for Varicose Veins: Recipe
Ingredients: (serves 1)
– 1/2 cup frozen cranberries
– 2 oranges, peeled and chopped with some pith (white membrane) left on the outside
– 1 cup ripe pineapple
– 1 grapefruit, peeled and chopped, with some pith (white membrane) left on the outside
– 1 cup coconut water or filtered water
Stick all of the above ingredients in a blender, like the Vitamix, and blend until smooth! If you use frozen cranberries it will be more ice cream-like in texture.
